Blog Post: Do you want to run the technology world?

Who runs the world? Girls! Beyonce may have been speaking truth, but unfortunately the computer science community has not had the same luck. Girls Who Code is an international non-profit that is seeking to achieve the goal of closing the gender gap throughout the technology sector. Have you ever been asked by your parents or grandparents to help fix their tv, or help them understand how to use the abundance of technology that is available to us? You initiated a task based in computer science! Computer technology specialists have long had a stereotype of being a quiet, geeky, awkward man that struggles outside of his comfort space. It’s time that look is completely changed and reformed through the intelligence and elegance of the girls that are supported by Girls Who Code. Girls Who Code is spearheading the fight in closing the gender gap in computer technology. We not only want to develop intelligent computer scientists, but install our values of bravery, sisterhood, and activism in order for the girls that come through our program to have the ability to lead and transform the industry. Girls Who Code provides various kinds of programs that girls can try. The Clubs program allows girls to engage with fellow classmates and friends in an after-school platform and is for grades 3-12. Already in college? No worries! The College Loops program allows girls in college to engage with women in the technology sector to talk about the benefits and learn the skills that could turn into a career. There is even a summer immersion program for grades 10-12 that allows girls to get a two-week experience working on their skills and ultimately learning about what it means to be a girl in technology. Girls who code is investing in the future of the technology sector. Over 300,000 girls have been taught through in-person programs and over half of the girls that are served come from historically underrepresented groups, that might not have the opportunities to get into computer science. The alumni of Girls Who Code decide to major in computer science or related fields at a rate that is 15 times the national average. Girls Who Code has also provided the ability to obtain a free lesson plan that feature women in tech for individuals or teachers that want to learn more about the history of women in tech to inspire the next generation.
